The following list represents just a few of the many projects around the world being initiated and developed with the Lowell Milken Center. Each project has outcomes, which causes students to change attitudes and behavior. Projects will continue to be added to this list, and more information, photos and materials will be added to each project as it grows and evolves.


Hero Street
Silvis, Illinois

To honor Hispanic soldiers who gave their lives in World War II and the Korean War, students in Illinois are developing a film documentary, lesson plans and a public memorial.


Ogden Elementary Core Virtures of Unsung Heroes
Ogden, Kansas

This outstanding elementary program, consisting of unsung heroes in history and project based learning, is one you will want to replicate. Fifth grade teacher, Ashley Rippe-Blank, is willing to share her ideas. A curriculum unit of this project is available by writing the Lowell Milken Center - see Contact Us at the top of the page.


"Pigtails and Protests: The Smallest Freedom Fighter"
Kansas

Nicknamed “The Smallest Freedom Fighter” by Martin Luther King, Jr., Sheyann Webb became the youngest activist on the historic 50-mile Selma-to-Montgomery March of 1965, which became the pivotal moment in the modern civil rights movement. As she participated in the march protesting unfair voting practices, Sheyann’s courage inspired her parents, teachers, and fellow students to further action.


"A Recipe for Legacy: 35mm and a Wide-Angle Lens"
Kansas

The LMC is directing a project about an unsung photographer from Little Rock, Arkansas. Will Counts had a desire to show feelings through the wide-angle lens on his 35mm Nikon S2 camera. Three Kansas students have taken his mission and are now writing a performance they have titled "A Recipe for Legacy: 35mm and a Wide-Angle Lens."


"She Outranks Me"
Christian Heights School

Mary Bickerdyke is an unsung hero of the Civil War, who is inspiring high school students of Lowell Milken Center Education Specialist Maria Bahr. The students are bringing to life this outstanding woman from the 1860s, whose influence affected even General William Tecumseh Sherman who commented, “She outranks me.”


A Stradivarius and a Young Girl
Fort Scott, Kansas High School
Collaborating with the Frederick Douglass Family Foundation of Las Vegas

This powerful story of respect and understanding is told in a drama performance by two students from Fort Scott High School. Music, primary sources and oral history show the life of a leading American of the Civil War time period.


Student-Produced Web Sites
Kansas

View these Unsung Heroes web sites completed by students. These two web sites, based on unsung heroes in history, were completed by Kansas students. Both won at the regional history championships on February 28th. The Lowell Milken Center staff and Education Specialist, Maria Bahr, directed this work. The students will continue to perfect these sites in the spring semester.


Sybil Ludington: The Female Paul Revere
Missouri
Female students in Western Missouri examine in an exhibit, a sixteen-year-old girl who convinced her father to let her ride and alert the Continental Army during the Revolutionary War. The students use this unsung hero to promote patriotism.
