Lt. Colonel Tran Ngoc Hue

Harry-in-the-army Lt. Colonel Tran Ngoc “Harry” Hue is a former lieutenant colonel with the 1st Infantry Division Army of the Republic of Vietnam who received the Silver Star, the highest award for heroism on the battlefield that the American military can grant an allied soldier, as well as two Bronze Stars for Valor.

Two juniors in Susan Sittenauer’s AP U.S. History class at Seaman High School in Topeka, Kansas, are developing an Unsung Hero project about Harry and his heroic actions during the Vietnam War.

July 2017 Update: Thanks to the discovery of Lt. Colonel Tran Ngoc “Harry” Hue by Susan Sittenauer and her Seaman High School students, this Unsung Hero has been receiving more well-deserved recognition. Author Mark Bowden this month released a book called “Hue 1968,” depicting the battle in which Harry saved countless U.S. Marines, got badly injured, and was taken prisoner for 13 years.  Harry’s story is an integral part of the book, which will also be turned into a television series. In addition, Ken Burns and Lynn Novick recently completed a documentary about Vietnam, in which Harry appears, that will premiere on PBS on September 17, 2017. Full PBS broadcast details available here.

Meet the Storytellers

Educator Susan Sittenauer has twice been named Kansas History Day Teacher of the Year and is a 2014 Lowell Milken Center Fellow.

A leader at Seaman High School, Hailey Reed plays varsity volleyball and softball, serves as Vice President of Future Business Leaders of America, and participates in the math, spirit and interact clubs. She is also a member of the KC Peppers Gold Fast Pitch and SHS Bank. Says Hailey:

“I am so excited to show people how Tran Ngoc Hue is truly the definition of an Unsung Hero. He had an incredible impact on the people around him, and I feel strongly that everyone should know about his actions.”

Andrea Sodergren, also a school leader, participates in cross country, basketball, track, the spirit club and the Fellowship of Christian Athletes. She is also on the Mission committee at her church. Says Andrea:

“I’m really excited to show everyone how much of an impact Tran Ngoc Hue had on the outcome of many battles in the Vietnam War. Because he is an Unsung Hero, the vast majority of people are unaware how influential he was.”
